New Golden Mask of a Thracian King Unearthed
Thursday, July 19, 2007
Golden mask along with a solid gold ring engraved with a Greek inscription and the portrait of a bearded man were found over the weekend by Bulgarian archaeologists led by prof. Georgi
Kitov.
The findings are from a rich Thracian grave (4th century BC) at a mound close to the Sliven village of Topolchane, announced BNR.
It is supposed that the golden mask is of a Thracian king. The mask is lighter and less carefully made than the one belonging to King Theres, found near Kazanluk.
Silver rhyton for wine, silver cup and bronze vessels have also been found. The rhyton represents a head of an animal, probably deer, and is around 30 cm high. The tomb is paneled with wood, there
are remains of human skeleton, one bronze vessel and three preserved big earthen amphora with a stamp on their handle.
